Join us Friday, October 29th at Empire Arts Gallery in Kirkwood, from 5 PM to 11 PM for A New Hope: A Collection of works by Brandi Smart & Malia Rifkin.
One year ago, using their combined tattooing & fine arts skills, these two brave women pooled their blood, sweat, and tears to carve a space for local artists to showcase their work. Somehow in the middle of building an empire - throwing artist markets, curating galleries, and slinging ink - our heroines even managed to balance creating their own work!
Malia’s mandalas are full of vibrant, beautiful colors and patterns, and a meditative reflection of past escapism from a career of overload and isolation.
Brandi’s series of nightscapes take inspiration from the old Roadside America. The transience of a road at night and the lights from closed strip malls and bodegas are akin to a kind of nameless oasis that writes its own underlying narrative.
Together the pair showcase the dichotomy of light and dark. Their work (and the building it’s housed in) is meant to be a beacon of the balance so desperately needed in these times: a new hope. A New Hope is sponsored in part by our friends at Elmyriachi, Tower Press, Topo Chico, PBR Art & The Fuzz Firm.
